Step-by-Step Guide

How to Create Trial Tasks and Assign Them to Talent

A practical walkthrough of creating trial tasks, assigning them to shortlisted applicants, and reviewing their submissions on HireTalent.ph. If you want the why and the best examples, read our Guide to Trial Tasks first.

TL;DR

Trial tasks let you see how applicants actually perform before you interview them. On HireTalent.ph, you create a task once, save it to your library, and assign it to any shortlisted applicant. They submit files and notes in-platform, you review and approve, and pay the stipend via Wise.

Example tasks:

  • Hiring a podcast editor? Ask them to edit a 10-minute raw clip with a cold open.
  • Hiring a VA? Have them reply to 4 redacted real guest messages in your brand voice.
1

Create a task

  1. 1.From the employer sidebar, open Trial Tasks.
  2. 2.Click Create Task (top right, with a icon).
  3. 3.Fill in the task form:
  4. Task Title. Keep it short and specific.
Description. Explain the brief in a few sentences. Include success criteria.
Expected Deliverables. What exactly should they submit (e.g. “Edited MP4 + 1-page notes doc”).
Estimated Duration.Short (< 2 hours), Medium (2-4 hours), or Long (4+ hours). Medium is the sweet spot.
Paid task. Toggle on, then enter a USD amount. We recommend $5 to $20.
  5. 4.Click Create Task. It's saved to your library and reusable for future applicants.
Build 2 or 3 saved tasks for each role you hire for, not a new one every time. The template pays itself back after your second applicant.

Assign to your shortlist

  1. 1.Open My Jobsfrom the sidebar and click the job you're hiring for.
  2. 2.Go to the Applicants tab and pick who you want to shortlist.
  3. 3.On a shortlisted applicant's row, click Assign trial task .
  4. 4.Pick a task from your saved library and click Assign task.
  5. 5.The applicant gets an email and an in-platform notification with the brief, deadline, and payment amount.
Assign the same task to 2 to 5 shortlisted applicants and compare side by side. This is way sharper than comparing resumes or interview vibes.

Review the submission

  1. 1.You'll get an email when the applicant submits. Click through to the application page.
  2. 2.Review the attached files (video, audio, docs, images), the talent's notes, and their reasoning.
  3. 3.Write a short feedback note, even if you're passing. Two sentences is enough.
  4. 4.Choose one of:
    • Mark as approved if the work meets the bar.
    • Ask for revisionsif it's close but not quite there.
    • Pass respectfullyif it isn't a fit. Feedback still goes a long way.
  5. 5.Send the stipend to the talent's Wise account. Their payment details are on their profile.
Trial-task payouts happen manually for now. The applicant's Wise details live on their profile. One-click in-platform payouts are on our roadmap.

A few notes

  • Trial tasks are available on subscribed plans for jobs that receive applications on HireTalent.ph (not external-link jobs).
  • Saved tasks are reusable across jobs. Build a library, not one-off tasks.
  • All files, notes, and status live on the application, so you won't lose attachments in email threads.
